Community Rapid HIV Testing

The MPOWER Rapid HIV Testing service continues during lockdown!

All service users who book an appointment on the link below will receive a confirmation text that will allow you to travel outside your 5km limit to attend your testing appointment.

Due to COVID-19 we have had to adapt the way we offer our service.

To respect physical distancing recommendations, we are unable to offer a walk-in service – we can only see service users that have booked an appointment using the link below.

Ongoing restrictions mean it is not possible for us to offer testing in the LGBT pubs, clubs, saunas and community centres that we would normally. Instead, our team of trained peer volunteers will now offer free rapid HIV testing to gay and bisexual men in the community space at HIV Ireland, 70 Eccles Street, Dublin 7 (we’re the red door across from the Mater Private Hospital).

To book an appointment, click the link in the booking section below.

Testing will take place on Wednesdays from 6pm to 8pm and Saturdays from 2pm to 4pm. Initially, we will have limited appointments available on each testing session. If there is high demand for the service, we will add extra testing sessions.

If you have any queries regarding your appointment, you can contact Davy on 0860657212 or email davy.quinlivan@hivireland.ie

Currently the service is only available in English but we are working on making the service available in Portuguese and Spanish soon.
Atualmente, oferecemos serviços apenas em Inglês. Esperamos que em breve tenhamos serviços disponíveis em Português para lhe atender.
Actualmente, ofrecemos este servicio solo en inglés. Esperamos tener el servicio en español disponible en breve.

Book Your Test Online

The next MPOWER Rapid HIV Testing session takes place:

Saturday 31st October : 2:00 – 4:00 PM

Form to book – available here from Friday at 2pm

************************************************************************

Online booking opens 24 hours before the service is due to open i.e. at 6pm on Tuesday for Wednesday testing and at 2pm on Friday for Saturday testing. Online booking will close 30 minutes before the testing session is due to start or when all appointments have been booked.

Your test is completely confidential. We only ask for your mobile phone number to confirm your appointment and for the purpose of COVID-19 contact tracing, if needed. Your HIV test result is always completely confidential.

What to expect?

The reintroduction of this service has been planned and considered to optimise your care, while minimising risks to the public, to our volunteers and to the wider healthcare system. With that in mind, we will ask you questions about COVID-19 when booking your test online and again when you arrive for testing. It’s important that you answer these questions to the best of your knowledge to protect the health of service users and staff.

The reintroduction of this service has been informed by best public health advice and will be implemented in compliance with Infection Prevention and Control guidance. When you select an appointment time, please arrive exactly at this time. This is to avoid queuing; help minimise the amount of service users in the building and to ensure we operate smoothly and efficiently.

When you arrive for your test, the full process will be explained to you – please follow this guidance and respect physical distancing requirements. You will be required to wear a mask which we will provide for you.

The testing process remains the same:

  1. On arrival at the testing venue you will be greeted by one of our testing team. They will give you a short registration form to complete. All questions on the registration form are used for statistical information e.g. age, gender, country of birth etc.
  2. Once the form has been completed keep it with you until you meet the tester.
  3. You will be brought to our private testing area by a member of the team. Before proceeding with the test, you will have a brief chat. The main purpose of the chat is for the tester to ensure that this is the right time and place for you to test, to make clear how test results will be communicated and to offer you any further information or support you might want.
  4. Following this chat and if you would like to proceed with testing, you will sign a consent form which gives permission for the tester to perform the test. A small sample of blood is taken from a finger-prick – your result will be ready in 60 seconds.
  5. If you receive a negative result, you can speak to our testing team about the prevention options available to keep you negative. Receiving a reactive result is an indication of your HIV status.  A follow-up blood test in a clinical setting is required to confirm the result – we will organise this for you and any other information or support that you might require.

Good to know!

  • Our rapid HIV testing is completely free of charge.
  • Testing 6 weeks after your last potential exposure can give you a good indication of your HIV status, however you should wait 12 weeks (3 months) to be definite.
  • If you’ve had a potential exposure in the last 72 hours, consider PEP.
